Behavior interventions and supports are needed for students. Many of the behavior referrals that I receive have to with students not respecting each other, not respecting teachers/adults , not understanding the basic social school rules, etc. We have an SEL specialist and a Behavior interventionist. We need these positions to be full time to support more students throughout the day.

At the end of the school year, it was being kind to others especially while online. The cyberbullying that was happening was not during school hours, but it did bring challenges to the classroom. We are starting this year off with an assembly from NetSmartz and will have something monthly as a continued reminder of being safe and kind while online.

Our students need literacy support across the curriculum. We will need to focus by department on specific strategies to focus on literacy by subject area.

Our school has seen a large influx of English Language Learners. There is a need for ELL services and language support in non-ESL classes. In addition, we are still unraveling the effects of the pandemic. Students and families are in need of more robust mental health supports.

Over the past few years I have noticed that our students need a lot of support in basic behaviors and respect. I think the time we spent home during Covid lockdowns has really deteriorated what it means to be a good well behaved student. The level in which I feel like we need to address this problem is district/school wide, and we must address it in our classrooms, the hallways, the cafe, etc.

I'm seeing a pattern of student needs in the social emotional realm. This is being addressed through individual talk and therapy sessions with the counselor, school psychologist, Behavior TOSA, and a lot of students just need that extra support in and outside the classroom. This can be addressed in continued supports for next year.
A lot of this is based on the funding and also staffing.

Students need Social Emotional Supports. This can be addressed at all levels. There are many targeted assemblies and school-wide programs that help address this issue. I know several teachers who would want additional PD on the topic.

Getting into the classrooms is always valuable especially to visit with the students. There have been many occasions when I have seen a student struggling in the classroom but then I see it over 3 visits - that is a concern. Once I have a conversation with the teacher I can suggest some supports such as our counselor or maybe a tool from spec ed. Some of my new teachers are not aware of the supports we have available or are nervous to voice their concern. At the grade level it is always our grade 5s and 6s that struggle with their changing social skills and we always have our cultural support person and our school counselor working with small groups throughout the school year to lend support. I also make sure that I meet with the grade 6s before recess frequently.

I am seeing many students needing SEL supports and behavior supports. This is wide ranging. I think addressing this within grade levels would be most appropriate. Our freshmen came in this school year with lots of baggage from the last 18 months. All students were effected by the pandemic. So all students could benefit from support.

Since the pandemic, SEL has become a major issue for student and staff. Supporting the social-emotional health or our students should be a major part of the conversation.
